How river conservation is the best medicine to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and social injustice.

Of Mice, Men, and Mosquitos: Infectious Disease in a Changing Climate
Zina Semenovskaya, MD, FAWM, ISTM
Climate change has dramatically altered critical aspects of our environment, leading to a profound change in the behavior, habitats, and spread of numerous disease vectors. In this talk, we will discuss the effects of climate change on the Aedes mosquito, its relationship to the spread of Dengue and related viruses, and the implications for human health, public policy, and how we adapt to the challenges posed by a warming planet.

The Changing Landscape of Water Security
Avinash Patil, MD, FAWM
Water is essential to life, and should be a basic human right. This lecture will discuss how climate change is affecting access and availability of freshwater, and how vulnerable populations are being affected.

Fire and Water Can Mix: The Use of Prescribed Fire as an Environmental Tool
Lynn E. Yonge, MD, FAAFP, FAWM
Wildfires present a challenge to citizens, rescue personnel and firefighters each year. With decreased rainfall and drought associated with climate change, this problem has only worsened. Prevention of naturally occurring fires started by lightning has increased fuel in natural forests. Fires in these areas are often catastrophic because of human habitation at the wilderness/urban interface (WUI). Prescribed burns are an accepted alternative to uncontrolled wildfires. This lecture will provide an overview of the science of prescribed burning. It will help dispel the fear of fire as a useful forest management tool. It will cover aspects of survival in wildfire conditions, fire safety, heat illness and dehydration, first aid for burns and lessons learned in recent wildfire disaster response.

Why I replaced my stethoscope with POCUS, and you should too!
In this two hour lecture and hands on workshop, I will provide scenarios from my own experience working in remote areas and hypothetical cases where point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) was essential. We will discuss different applications of POCUS, what questions it can help answer, and what one should consider when traveling with a POCUS device in austere environments.
